Alabama Food Prices Decline in June

Tuscaloosa, AL – Food prices in Alabama supermarkets are down, but not by much.

ALFA's monthly food basket survey shows the prices for twenty basic market items fell one percent in June.

The total market basket cost $51.60, down 58 cents from May. Regionally, shoppers in northwest Alabama have the cheapest market basket, at $49.40. Consumers in south Alabama pay the most, at $55.51.

Dairy products fell the most, with ice cream 23 cents cheaper than its May price. Cottage cheese fell by the same amount. Milk is down five cents to $2.75 per half gallon.

Bacon is down 14 cents to $4.04 a pound. Prices for eggs and tomatoes also fell.

Summer barbecue staples pork chops, steak and ground beef went up. Pork chops rose 13 cents to $3.13 a pound, steaks up 24 cents to $8.65 a pound and ground beef up ten cents to just under $2.50 a pound.
