Montgomery, AL – A decades-old program that helps troubled youth stay out of juvenile detention has been spared for now, but advocates and directors say its financial woes are far from over.
The Community Intensive Training for Youth or CITY program was slated to close Tuesday because there were no more funds to keep it running.
A Legislative appropriation of $1 million will help it survive until the end of the fiscal year on September 30, and the program run by the 2-year college system will be transferred to the Alabama Department of Youth Services on October 1, where its future remains uncertain.
The program offers counseling and intensive tutoring for youths, and judges use the 11 locations throughout the state as an alternative to sending the young people to juvenile detention.
