Montgomery, AL – Professional boxing could return to Alabama on Nov. 19, with Olympic bronze medalist Deontay Wilder featured in the first bout.
The Legislature voted in the spring to create a state boxing commission to sanction professional bouts in Alabama. Gov. Bob Riley and other state officials have appointed four of the commission's five members.
Wilder and his co-manager, Jay Deas, said they are shooting for Wilder to have a bout in Alabama on Nov. 19. The Tuscaloosa boxer won a bronze medal in the heavyweight division at 2008 Olympics. He is 6-0 as pro.
The governor says he's never been to a boxing match and would like to attend Alabama's first bout.
