Birmingham, AL – IndyCar racing is coming to Alabama.
Gov. Bob Riley was scheduled to be in the Birmingham area Monday to announce that the Barber Motorsports Park will play host to open-wheel racing starting next year.
Reports say the race will be called the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. Promoters hope it will attract as many as 100,000 people to the track, located east of downtown Birmingham near Leeds.
Indy cars conducted two days of testing at the Barber Motorsports Park earlier this year.
The Indy Racing League has 18 dates on its schedule each year. The Alabama track is getting a spot that opened up when Detroit lost its race.
