Baldwin Teacher Enters Ala. Race For Lt. Gov.

Mobile, AL – Baldwin County educator Gene Ponder says he plans to seek the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor next year.

The teacher from Spanish Fort High School announced his candidacy Monday. He joins Republican state Sen. Hank Erwin of Montevallo in the GOP race.

Ponder has run twice without success for the Alabama House of Representatives. He ran once as a Libertarian and once as a Democrat. Ponder calls the Republican Party a good fit for his views.

He said that if elected, he will point out which legislators, lobbyists and special interests are responsible for inaction in the Senate.

The incumbent, Lt. Gov. Jim Folsom Jr., is the only announced candidate on the Democratic side.
