Birmingham, AL – Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans living in Alabama can now celebrate their service with special license plates.

The license plates are available starting this week in Alabama's 67 counties. They feature a blue or green border, an image of a medal and other symbols of valor like a waving American flag.

Active duty, Reserve, National Guard, and honorably discharged members of the military are eligible for the plates with proof of service in Iraq or Afghanistan. Also eligible are those who were deployed in direct support of military operations in both theaters.

To get a plate, veterans must provide a letter certifying their service from the state VA department. Current or former service members can request a certification letter by contacting their county veterans service office.
