West Alabama Post Office On Cutbacks List

By Associated Press

Tuscaloosa, AL – A Tuscaloosa-area post office is one of nearly 700 in danger of closing as the United States Postal Service struggles to make ends meet.

The postal service is facing a loss of more than $6 billion this fiscal year, despite a 2-cent increase in the price of stamps in May, cuts in staff and removal of collection boxes.

City Councilman Kip Tyner has assembled a group of 15 people from different areas of the Alberta community to brainstorm ways to keep the post office open and is collecting signatures on a petition he intends to submit to the Postal Service.

Tyner has heard complaints from businesses that the Leland Shopping Center building housing the post office is deteriorating and thinks that could be a reason for closure.
