Huntsville Airport Could Shop For Lower Airfares

Huntsville, AL – Huntsville International Airport, recently rapped for having the most expensive airfares of any U.S. airport, has applied for a grant to recruit a low-fare carrier.

The board that runs the airport has agreed to pursue a grant of up to $2 million from the federal Department of Transportation that would be used for incentives and other recruitment tools to attract a low-fare carreir.

The DOT recently reported that Huntsville's $505 per person average airfare was the highest in the country in the first quarter, compared to the national average of $315.

The airport has had three low-fare carriers previously, but the longest any of them operated was 16 months.
