Lawyers, Shareholders Compete For Scrushy's Money

Birmingham, AL – Court documents show that Richard Scrushy's lawyers and HealthSouth Corp. shareholders are competing for the personal fortune of the jailed former chief executive.

Lawyers for HealthSouth shareholders have filed court papers objecting to how much his lawyers are asking to be withdrawn from his estate and paid to them. Scrushy was ordered to pay HealthSouth $2.8 billion after a May civil trial in Jefferson County Circuit Court found him liable for the fraud that nearly bankrupted the company.

Scrushy's bank accounts have been garnished and his homes have been seized for auction. Twenty automobiles, a seaplane and personal belongings were also seized. Legal fees would have to come from cash on hand or from the sale proceeds of property.
