Montgomery, AL – The Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site will be honored on a new commemorative quarter being issued by the U.S. Mint.
Next year, the mint will start issuing quarters featuring national parks and other national sites from each of the 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia and U.S. territories.
The Tuskegee Airmen site was recommended by Gov. Bob Riley. He was notified Tuesday that Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar approved the recommendation.
Artists at the mint will prepare three to five designs for the commemorative quarter. The designs will be reviewed for historical accuracy, authenticity and overall composition to ensure that they appropriately represent the site.
