Former Ala. Lawmaker Seeks Bond During Appeal

Birmingham, AL – A former Alabama legislator convicted of fraud is asking a federal judge to let her remain out of prison while she appeals her conviction.

Former state Rep. Sue Schmitz of Toney asked a judge Tuesday to allow her to remain free on bond. She's currently set to begin serving a 2{-year prison sentence on Sept. 30.

Schmitz argued in court papers that she has lived in Alabama her entire life and is not a threat to flee.

Prosecutors didn't immediately file a response to her request.

Schmitz was automatically removed from the Legislature when she was convicted in February on charges of profiting from a no-show job that she created through political connections in Alabama's two-year college system.
