Birmingham, AL – Lines remain long at the Jefferson County Courthouse for people wanting to renew car tags even though some laid off county workers are back on the job.
Ten county employees were back at work Monday in the tax collector's office at the county courthouse in Birmingham. They were among the 1,000 county employees who had been on unpaid leave since Aug. 1 because of the county's financial condition.
The layoffs caused satellite courthouses to close and created long lines for tags and other services at the main courthouses in Birmingham and Bessemer.
County officials said lines were still long Monday, partly because more people buy tags at the end of the month.
Returning county employees are working 32-hour weeks.
