$20M Shortfall Found In Birmingham Budget

Birmingham, AL – City officials in Birmingham have disclosed a $20 million budget shortfall just days after the corruption conviction and ouster of its mayor, Larry Langford.

Interim Mayor Carole Smitherman said Tuesday the city's finance director under Langford has resigned, and she's assigned a task force to help figure out exactly what happened and how to solve the problem.

Langford was convicted on 60 felony counts of taking bribes while he was in his previous job as president of the Jefferson County Commission. But Smitherman said there's no reason to suspect he was taking bribes as mayor.

Smitherman says officials will try to determine if any crimes occurred.
