Montgomery, AL – A Republican state senator is pressing for a statewide vote on whether to abolish gambling in Alabama.
State Sen. Scott Beason's proposal would mean no charity bingo, no betting at dog tracks as well as no gambling halls with bingo machines that look and work much like slots.
Beason said he wants to see ``a straight up-and-down vote on gambling.''
Even gambling opponents say the bill faces very long odds.
Gov. Bob Riley's policy director said, ``You're never going to see that coming out of this Legislature.''
Constitutional amendments can be adopted by a simple majority of voters, but only after winning three-fifths approval of the state House and Senate.
