Officers Say Ala. Prisons Underreporting Assaults

Montgomery, AL – An organization for Alabama corrections officers says prison officials aren't reporting all the assaults against guards inside a maximum-security lockup.

The Alabama Correctional Organization said Thursday that statistics released in a lawsuit over violence at Donaldson prison show the department is drastically underreporting attacks on officers.

Publicly, the Department of Corrections reported 45 assaults by prisoners against officers from January 2008 through July of this year. But the organization says internal documents show that 68 actually occurred during the period.

The claims are similar to ones made Wednesday by attorneys representing inmates who are suing over conditions at Donaldson. The department denies intentionally underreporting the statistics.
