Jacksonville, AL – Jacksonville drivers who send text messages on their cell phone while driving could soon be breaking the law.
City council members will vote on a proposed ordinance to ban the practice and also prohibit drivers from viewing or sending texts.
Drivers would still be allowed to talk on cell phones, and could also send messages while traffic is stopped due to an obstruction.
Councilman Derek Raulerson introduced the ordinance, which he said was inspired by 20 other states' decisions to ban texting while driving.
Alabama's House of Representatives is expected to debate House Bill 53 when the session starts Tuesday.
