Montgomery, AL – Alabama taxpayers who contribute money to charities providing earthquake relief in Haiti can claim those donations on last year's state income tax returns.
Gov. Bob Riley and State Revenue Commissioner Tim Russell on Wednesday announced that any monetary contributions made to these charities between Jan. 11 and March 1 are eligible. That includes contributions made by text message, check, credit card or debit card.
Russell explained that by following the federal relief provision offered to Alabamians on their federal returns, taxpayers will receive the same tax benefit on their Alabama return.
State and federal tax laws require that taxpayers keep records of any deductible donations.
