Parents Ask Legislators To Honor PACT Contracts

Montgomery, AL – More than a dozen parents, students and other Alabama residents have urged a Legislative committee to insure that contracts for Alabama's prepaid college tuition program are honored.

The speakers appeared at a public hearing Tuesday before the House Education Appropriations Committee considering four bills to shore up the financially troubled prepaid college tuition program.

The bills include a measure to insure that PACT contracts currently in effect be honored. Another would change the makeup of the board that supervises PACT.

Committee members discussed adding language in the legislation that would cap the amount colleges could increase tuition for PACT participants.

Committee chairman Democratic Rep. Richard Lindsey of Centre said the panel would vote on the bills at its next meeting on Feb. 3.
