Montgomery, AL – The state Senate has overridden Alabama's Republican governor in a partisan political battle over a teacher code of ethics.
Gov. Bob Riley said Thursday's vote should be an outrage to teachers and parents who have worked to raise educational standards.
The Legislature voted two weeks ago for a resolution blocking a teacher code of ethics that was approved by the State Board of Education. The Republican governor vetoed the resolution Tuesday.
The Senate voted 22-10 Thursday to override the veto. Democratic senators mostly voted for the override, and Republicans voted against it. Now the issue goes to the House.
