Ala. House Committee Delays Vote On PACT Bills

Montgomery, AL – An Alabama House committee has delayed votes for one week on four bills aimed at insuring that contracts with Alabama's struggling prepaid college tuition program are honored.

The House Education Appropriations Committee held a public hearing on the bills last week and had scheduled a vote on them for Tuesday. But committee chairman Rep. Richard Lindsey, D-Centre, said negotiations are still under way and the vote will be next week.

Instead, the committee will meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the Alabama Power Auditorium at the Alabama Department of Archives and History to discuss Gov. Bob Riley's proposal to create charter schools.

As part of Alabama's distance learning initiative, students in some Alabama classrooms will be able to listen in as legislators discuss the pros and cons of charter schools.
