Montgomery, AL – Gov. Bob Riley says an Alabama House committee is holding up three bills which the governor said would help get Alabama residents off of the unemployment roles.
Riley said Wednesday the bills are part of his plan to provide incentives to encourage small businesses to hire new workers during the recession.
Riley said the bills have been stalled for weeks in the House Education Appropriations Committee and that the panel's chairman, Democratic Rep. Richard Lindsey of Centre, has declined to bring them up for a vote.
One of the bills would provide a $1,500 tax credit for every new job an employer creates by hiring a worker from unemployment rolls.
Lindsey said he instead supports a bill by Republican Rep. Robert Bentley of Tuscaloosa that would provide tax deductions for businesses that hire new workers for at least a year.
