Tuscaloosa AL – Alabama's small towns and downtowns will be under the spotlight over the next year. The state Department of Tourism will make them the subject of a campaign called the Great Alabama Homecoming, which features 215 of the state's small town - downtown districts. The goal is to create interest in the unique qualities of each community and draw new visitors in hopes of creating a spark of economic improvement. Some communities are using the opportunity to mark major historic milestones. Huntsville will recognize the 50th anniversary of Marshall Space Flight Center (9/8). Talladega will celebrate its 175th anniversary (3/27), while the town of Lincoln will turn 100 (7/3). One of the first events begins this Thursday as Franklin hosts the Alabama River Festival. The Great Alabama Homecoming kicks off tomorrow (Tuesday) with a proclamation from Governor Bob Riley.
