Push For New Ala. State Song Postponed 1 Year

Montgomery, AL – An Alabama legislator trying to change the state song is going to wait a year to let Alabama citizens vote on what the state song should be.

Democratic Rep. Johnny Mack Morrow of Red Bay had introduced a bill that would switch Julia Tutwiler's ``Alabama'' to being the state anthem and make ``Stars Fell on Alabama'' the state song. The House Tourism and Travel Committee approved Morrow's bill Tuesday, but he said he won't try to pass it this year.

Instead, he plans to follow a recommendation by Republican Rep. Barry Mask of Wetumpka. He will try to get the state Tourism Department to conduct an online poll with about 20 songs related to Alabama. Then he will use the public's recommendation to write a new bill next year.
