Montgomery, AL – The Alabama court system is laying off more than 100 temporary employees.
Chief Justice Sue Bell Cobb said Monday the layoffs are effective March 31 due to funding shortages.
Cobb said across-the-board cuts appear likely for the state General Fund budget, and that will mean a drastic reduction for the state court system. She said the layoffs could grow to several hundred court employees unless the governor uses money from the state's rainy day fund to help state agencies.
The layoffs are similar to what occurred in 2003, when the court system had widespread layoffs due to state budget troubles.
