Alabama Sets Up Temporary Employment Office in Gulf Region

By Associated Press

Bayou la Batre, AL – The Alabama Department of Industrial Relations is opening a satellite office in Bayou La Batre to assist workers who lose their jobs because of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Industrial Relations Director Tom Surtees says the office will be in the public library and should open at 8 a.m. Thursday. It will be open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. weekdays until the need is no longer present.

Surtees says not everyone affected may be eligible for unemployment compensation at this time, but everyone who is affected should apply in case they become eligible for benefits in the future.
