Redstone Arsenal Says 2 Injured In Army Base Explosion

Huntsville, LA – Two contract workers are in critical condition at a Birmingham hospital after being injured in an explosion while removing fuel from rockets at Redstone Arsenal.

A spokeswoman at the north Alabama Army base, Kimberly Henry, said all others were accounted for after the 8:45 a.m. Wednesday explosion.

Henry said the two injured workers were taken to the burn unit at UAB Hospital in Birmingham. The hospital said they were in critical condition.

There was no word on the cause of the explosion. But Henry said it occurred while workers were removing a propellant, ammonium perchlorate, from the rockets.

Henry said a third person was working near the two injured workers, but was not hurt in the blast, which left parts of the building in wreckage.
