Huntsville, AL – Madison County Sheriff Blake Dorning can finally get down to the business of running a newly expanded jail.
The 900-bed, $80 million city-county facility is ready for occupancy after a construction project that began in 2003.
The sheriff says he hopes to begin moving inmates to the new jail by the end of the month.
A new contract between Huntsville and Madison County spells out that the city will pay the county $2.1 million a year to run the facility. It says Huntsville can keep 285 inmates there per night, and that the county will get 20 percent of any damages awarded in a lawsuit against the original builder and architect.
