Gulf Shores, AL – Hundreds of people are combing Alabama's primary tourist beaches for tar balls after the discovery of a few dozen of them in Baldwin County.
Gulf Shores Mayor Robert Craft said no additional deposits were found Wednesday morning, but crews will be out checking the surf for hours. It's not known for sure, but the tar is believed to be related to the huge Gulf oil spill.
Craft said workers picked up as many as 50 tar balls Tuesday west of Gulf Shores. They resembled small pieces of asphalt but were soft. Both beach patrols and contractors hired by BP are looking for additional deposits.
Plans are going ahead for a weekend music festival that will draw thousands of people to the beach in Gulf Shores.
