Montgomery, AL – Having the Memorial Day holiday on the day before Alabama's primary election is causing some changes in campaign strategy.
Normally, the major candidates for governor will spend the day before the election flying around the state having news conferences in the biggest cities. No one is doing that this Memorial Day.
Republican Bradley Byrne said a fly-around didn't make sense on a holiday. Instead, he visited the veterans nursing home in Bay Minette. One of his Republican opponents, Tim James, visited the new veterans cemetery in Montevallo.
On the Democratic side, Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks did a statewide tour late last week instead of Monday. U.S. Rep. Artur Davis attended a Memorial Day event in Gadsden. Davis said Memorial Day is not a day for politics.
