Birmingham, AL – Jefferson County officials say many businesses will receive refunds because new business-license fees are lower than the fees under the previous license code.
County Finance Director Travis Hulsey says the businesses already getting refunds paid a business-license fee that covers a period overlapping a new county business tax, which began Jan. 1.
Hulse says that in many instances, the credit applied to the previous license is greater than the amount due for the new licenses.
The county's revenue department is still processing new business-license applications that were due May 31. The county's new business tax limits the license calculation to a base of pre-tax income rather than gross receipts.
