Montgomery, AL – State prison officials say they will be able to finance $98 million in prison repairs and renovations mostly through an innovative energy savings program.
Sixty-two buildings throughout the prison system would have infrastructure fixed up in the project.
Corrections Commissioner Richard Allen said $77 million will come from energy savings projects guaranteed by two companies and $21 million from a federal stimulus grant.
The latest plan comes after an effort to sell corrections department property fell short. If successful, it means prison officials will not have to ask the Legislature for more General Fund money to repair prisons.
