Ala Justices Clear Way For Raid Of Victoryland

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Supreme Court has overturned a Macon County circuit judge's order that had blocked Gov. Bob Riley's task force on gambling from raiding the Victoryland electronic bingo casino.

The justices in a unanimous ruling Friday overturned the order of Circuit Judge Tom Young that had blocked the task force since March from raiding Victoryland in Macon County.

Riley said the ruling means local officials can no longer protect ``gambling bosses.'' And Task Force Commander John Tyson said a raid can now go ahead, although he did not indicate when, or if, one would be undertaken.

Mark White, attorney for Victoryland owner Milton McGregor, said the court ruling makes the governor a king with ``unchecked power'' over local officials.
