Legislative Panel Moves To Stop Last Minute Pacts

Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Legislature's Contract Review Committee has warned Gov. Bob Riley not to send any questionable contracts through the committee for review in the closing weeks of his administration.

Riley leaves office in January and the current committee will disband on Nov. 2 when new legislators are elected. New committee members will be appointed in January.

The committee chairman, Democratic Rep. Alvin Holmes of Montgomery, said Thursday the date for the current committee's last meeting has been changed from Oct. 7 to Oct. 28 to give the Riley administration less time to push through contracts over the committee's objections The committee also is requiring that most contracts approved this month and next month include language that either the state or the contract holder can cancel within 30 days.
