Montgomery, AL – Democrat ``Walking'' Wendell Mitchell has served almost 30 years in the Alabama Senate representing a district where most voters once considered themselves Democrats.
But times have changed. Voters in the district stretching across six south and central Alabama counties now mostly vote Republican, and Mitchell hopes he can hold on against a young Republican lawyer and Iraq War veteran, Bryan Taylor.
The race in Alabama's 30th Senate District is an example of what's going on across the state as Republicans seek to grab control of the Alabama Statehouse from Democrats for the first time in more than 130 years.
Democrats currently hold 60 seats in the House to 44 for Republicans, with one vacancy. In the Senate, Democrats hold a 20-14 advantage, with one independent.
