Hallford Asks Gov. Riley To Stop Execution

Montgomery, AL – Alabama death row inmate Phillip Hallford has asked Gov. Bob Riley to stop his scheduled Thursday execution.

The clemency petition filed late Tuesday is one of two last-minute efforts pending to save the life of the 63-year-old Hallford.

He has also asked the Alabama Supreme Court to intervene.

Hallford was convicted of forcing his 15-year-old daughter to lure her 16-year-old boyfriend, Eddie Shannon, to a secluded area in Dale County, shooting him to death and dumping the body off a bridge. Court records show that Hallford made a necklace from casings of bullets used in the shooting and forced his daughter to wear it.

Shannon's stepmother, Angelita Johns, said Wednesday Hallford should be executed and she called the killing of her stepson ``unforgivable.''
