Bedford Elected Minority Leader In Ala.Senate

Montgomery, AL – Veteran Alabama state Sen. Roger Bedford of Russellville has been elected minority leader in the Alabama Senate.

The 54-year-old Bedford was elected during a meeting of Democratic state senators in Montgomery Tuesday night.

Bedford is beginning his seventh term in the Senate and was an unsuccessful candidate for U.S. Senate in 1996.

He had been a powerful member of the majority in the Senate until Republicans won majorities in the House and Senate in the Nov. 2 general election. Bedford was previously chairman of the Senate committee that prepares the General Fund budget, but will lose that position as Republicans take over most leadership positions.
