Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Senate has passed Gov. Bob Riley's bill to stop public employees from having payroll deductions for membership dues and political contributions to lobbying groups.
More than 150 members of the Alabama Education Association showed up at the Legislature Friday to oppose the bill. But the new Republican majority in the Senate made Riley's bill the first it has passed. The 22-12 vote sends the bill to the House for consideration.
The House voted 104-0 Friday for three of Riley's bills. They would ban PAC-to-PAC transfers, prohibit pass-through pork projects and require people who lobby the executive branch of government to register with the State Ethics Commission. The three bills now go to the Senate for consideration.
The Legislature's special session will continue on Monday.
