Montgomery, AL – Former House Speaker Seth Hammett has been named to a key position in the cabinet of incoming Republican Gov. Robert Bentley.
Bentley named Hammett on Monday to be director of the Alabama Development Office. Hammett of Andalusia is a Democrat who served as speaker for the past 12 years and was in the House for 32 years. He did not seek re-election last year.
Hammett is currently the vice president of business development for PowerSouth Energy Cooperative in Andalusia.
He is considered an expert in economic development and has worked with past governors - Republicans and Democrats - to bring jobs to Alabama. Businesses he helped recruit included Honda, Hyundai and ThyssenKrupp.
Hammett often traveled with past governors and ADO directors on trips to recruit new industry.
