Montgomery, AL – A federal judge in Birmingham has turned down Alabama death row inmate Leroy White's request to stop his execution scheduled for next week.
U.S. District Judge Karon Bowdre late Tuesday rejected White's request for a stay. White also has asked the Alabama Supreme Court to stop the scheduled Jan. 13 execution by lethal injection at Holman Prison in Atmore.
White had argued that his execution should be stopped because his former attorneys caused him to miss a deadline for appealing his conviction to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta.
White was sentenced to die for the Oct. 17, 1988, shotgun slaying in Huntsville of his 35-year-old estranged wife, Ruby, during a violent domestic argument.
