New Ala. Ethics Law Ends AEA's Polling Efforts

Montgomery, AL – A new state ethics law has caused the Alabama Education Association to suspend operation of its polling organization.

One of the laws passed by the Legislature in its recent special session makes it a crime for AEA to use membership dues deducted from educators' paychecks to engage in public opinion polling.

AEA announced Wednesday that its Capital Survey Research Center suspended operations after conducting some 1,000 polls since 1996. The closure cut about 30 jobs.

AEA's polls were used by many political candidates and were often cited in the news media.
