UAB Hires Its First Black Dean

Birmingham, AL – The University of Alabama at Birmingham has hired its first black dean.

Deborah L. Voltz, a Birmingham native and UAB professor who has worked in the Birmingham city schools, will head UAB's School of Education.

The 49-year-old dean's appointment was announced Wednesday. She takes the position vacated when Michael J. Froning retired last year.

Voltz grew up in Birmingham's Titusville neighborhood, graduated from West End High School and has specialized in education for urban students and children with special needs.
