Montgomery, AL – A federal appeals court has rejected a last-moment plea from Alabama death row inmate Leroy White that his execution be stopped.
White is set to be executed at 6 p.m. Thursday by lethal injection in the death chamber at Holman Prison in Atmore for the 1988 shotgun slaying of his estranged wife, Ruby. Ruby White was a first grade teacher in Huntsville.
White asked for a stay because his former attorneys did not inform him of a key ruling in his case and caused him to miss a deadline to appeal his conviction. But a three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals declined to stop the execution in a ruling late Tuesday.
White has also asked the Alabama Supreme Court to stop the execution.
