Sen. Shelby Says Threats Come With The Territory

Greensboro, AL – Sen. Richard Shelby says there isn't much the government can do to increase security for officials, especially federal lawmakers.

The Tuscaloosa Republican made the comments at a town meeting in Greensboro on Tuesday, days after the shooting of Democratic Rep. Gabriele Giffords in Arizona during a meeting with constituents.

Shelby told a group of constituents he gets threatening letters and people threaten him with bodily harm, but he considers it part of his job.

Shelby said he doesn't believe the government should spend the money it would take to provide officials with guards wherever they go, and that the guards would detract from the open society Americans want.
