New Ala. Governor Paying Back His $1.9 M Loan

Montgomery, aL – Alabama's new governor, Robert Bentley, has repaid himself for the majority of the $1.97 million he loaned his campaign when few people thought he had a chance of winning.

Bentley has filed an end-of-the-year campaign finance report showing he has repaid himself $1.26 million. Bentley reported his campaign still had $850,000 in debt as of Dec. 31, and most of that is to Bentley. Bentley's communications director, Rebekah Mason, said contributions picked up near the end of the campaign, which allowed the repayment. Bentley is still raising money to erase his campaign debt.

Bentley reported his campaign last year cost more than $8 million. That's much cheaper than the $12 million that Gov. Bob Riley spent in 2006.
