GOP Leaders Say No Changes In New Ala. Ethics Laws

Montgomery, AL – Two top Republicans in the Alabama Legislature say they will oppose any efforts by lobbyists to weaken new ethics laws.

House Speaker Mike Hubbard and Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh said Monday that the new Republican-controlled Legislature worked hard to pass tougher ethics laws in December and won't go backward. They said the Legislature will only consider changes if they are recommended by the State Ethics Commission or the attorney general. So far, there havent' been any recommendations.

No lawmaker has proposed changing the ethics rules.

The new laws limit how much lobbyists can spend wining and dining public officials and required lobbyists to register with the Ethics Commission if they try to influence the awarding of state contracts.
