Huntsville, AL – The trial of a federal lawsuit challenging Alabama's method of funding public schools has been scheduled to begin on March 21 before U.S. District Judge Lynwood Smith in Huntsville.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of students in several of Alabama's poorer counties. Smith set the trial date last week after hearing two years of motions in the complicated case. Smith said he would hear testimony and decide the case without a jury. He said in his order that he would hear testimony Monday through Friday during the trial, which could last for several months.
Attorneys for the students are asking Smith to order the Alabama Legislature to rewrite Alabama's property tax laws. Alabama has the lowest property tax rates in the nation.
