Ala. Senator Says 'Empty Clip' Remark Not Violent

Montgomery, AL – State Sen. Scott Beason of Gardendale says he wasn't advocating violence when he told a Republican audience that it was time to ``empty the clip'' when addressing illegal immigration.

Beason said Tuesday he was trying to show the Cullman County Republican Club that one bill in the Legislature won't solve illegal immigration and some other problems faced by the state. He says it will take an array of bills.

``Empty the clip'' is a phrase that refers to firing all the ammunition in an automatic or semiautomatic weapon.

Beason's speech Saturday in Cullman is drawing criticism. State Democratic Party Chairman Mark Kennedy says it was a reckless choice of words after the shootings in Tucson, Ariz.
