Montgomery, AL – The new administrator of Alabama's liquor agency says he opposes turning over the work of the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board to private business.
Administrator Mac Gipson supported privatization when he was a state legislator. But Gipson told about 100 ABC agents Tuesday that he no longer supports it because the numbers don't work in the state's favor. He said the ABC Board used the sale of liquor and liquor taxes to generate more than $190 million for the state General Fund last year. And he said the sales tax on liquor supports public education.
Gipson was appointed last month by Gov. Robert Bentley.
