Ala. Republicans Get Backlash For Hiring Democrats

Montgomery, AL – The hiring of Democrats by Alabama's new Republican leadership is creating a backlash.

Senate Majority Leader Jabo Waggoner said Wednesday political consultant Paul Hamrick dropped plans to work for the Senate Republican Caucus after some members questioned his hiring. Hamrick was chief of staff for Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman. Waggoner said Hamrick had done work for some Republicans in recent years.

The president of the Alabama Federation of Republican Women, Elois Zeanah, says she feels betrayed by Republicans who talk about changing government and then hire Democrats who were part of the government.

Republican Gov. Robert Bentley has hired three Democrats, including his former Democratic opponent, Ron Sparks. Republican Agriculture Commissioner John McMillan has also hired his former Democratic opponent, Glen Zorn.
