Census Shows Birmingham, Mobile Shrinking

Birmingham, AL – New Census figures show Birmingham remains Alabama's most populous city, but it's still shrinking and No. 2 Montgomery is catching up.

Census data released Thursday shows Birmingham's population fell to 212,237 between 2000 and 2010, continuing a trend of decline. That's a decrease of 12.6 percent over the decade, but it's still the most in the state.

Meanwhile, Montgomery grew 2.1 percent to 205,764 people since 2000. The capital city has gotten larger in recent years as it grows eastward toward Auburn.

Mobile is the state's third-largest city with 195,111 residents, but it decreased in size by 1.9 percent and could be passed in size by Huntsville. The rocket city grew 13.8 percent to 180,105.

Tuscaloosa grew 16.1 percent to 90,468 people is the state's fifth-largest city.
